Prior to its designation as a Conservation Area, Silver Harbour was one of many sites explored for silver in the Thunder Bay area during the late 1800s. During the 1940s, the site was extensively quarried for armor stone because of its durability and resistance to weathering. The rock was loaded onto barges and shipped to the Thunder Bay harbour for use in the formation of the existing breakwater.
