The LRCA is pleased to offer several free programming options during certain weeks throughout the school year.
Only 10 spots are available for each complimentary program, and registration typically opens two weeks before it runs. Our information flyer goes out to Superintendents for distribution to Educators a few days ahead of registration day, so watch your inbox – it is first come first served and spots fill fast!

Celebrate Arbor Week in May
Curriculum connections: global citizenship, sustainability, habitats and communities
Celebrate the beauty, diversity and many gifts of trees! Learn how to identify our boreal forest trees by name. Which trees live at your school? Explore the importance of trees to their habitats, and to our planet’s well-being, then roll up your sleeves and take action – we will deliver a young tree for your class to plant on your schoolyard!

Watershed Connections in April
Curriculum connections: Water Science and Geography
What is a watershed? Meet your watershed’s rivers! Discover the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway. In this interactive presentation, students discover how the LRCA protects watershed residents from flooding, then learn what actions they can take to help prevent flooding and protect the health of their watershed. Then students apply what they’ve learned by making one! Will their city flood?

Spring Water Awareness Program in February
Curriculum connections: injury prevention, seasonal change, science of water
This safety program creates awareness about spring water runoff, teaches students to recognize seasonal changes in ice and water, and promotes the message “Stay Away, Stay Safe!” We focus on age-appropriate preventive actions, what to do in an emergency, and how to stay safe around dams. And all students get the chance to experience what happens to their body when they fall into icy water during our science experiment!

The Lakehead Children’s Water Festival in June
In partnership with the City of Thunder Bay and Ontario Power Generation, along with many volunteers from local government, industry and organizations, the LRCA has offered this hands-on activity station celebration of water for over 15 years! Students learn about water conservation, water science and technology, cultural significances of water, water systems like our municipal water treatment plant and power generation stations and meet creatures living in the ponds at the LRCA Head Office!
